Relieving Minor Skin Irritations
Calamine lotion is found in many households and if available this can bring relief to skin reactions, but only put on areas that the dog cannot lick.
Witch hazel diluted at one in 50 is a great reliever of minor external irritations. It can even be made up in a small spray container and sprayed onto rashes and sores to give immediate short term relief.
Many people carry Benadryl tablets now, and they can be used in most dogs quite safely. I generally give a dose of one tablet per Labrador sized dog, scaling up and down accordingly to body weight, but check with your vet for the right dose for your dog.
For wasp or hornet stings, acids (like vinegar) diluted in water and applied to the sting will relieve the pain. For bee stings use diluted bicarbonate of soda. Take care that you don’t get bitten when applying it!
An abscess should be gently poulticed or bathed in warm salt water (made using sea salt) or alternatively Epsom salts, at a rate of four teaspoons to a pint of water), until the abscess bursts and drains.
The area can then be washed out with warm water, to which a little hydrogen peroxide has been added. This will make it bubble and foam. Do not use hydrogen peroxide around the eyes or ears! It will sting if not well diluted. (A 1 in 50 dilution would be the strongest I would suggest and it is effective at greater dilutions)
This hot spice is used in small amounts to improve the blood flow through the kidneys and also to help remove waste products.
Used as a urinary antiseptic and mild diuretic, this remedy is useful in preventing urinary infections and soothing the the urinary tract.

Hawthorn
