Walking the dog is one of life's simple pleasures, it is a great way to exercise, unwind and bond with your four legged friend.But for some people, walks can be spoilt due to other dog owners who don;t have the necessary control over their pet.

On numerous occasions, as I have been walking my dog, we have been approached by another dog. Usually, the owner is walking way behind the dog - unable to keep up or recall the dog and they shout, "Don't worry, he's friendly". Thankfully my dog is amicable and our walks so far have passed without serious incident, we've even made some good friends. Not all dog owners however are quite so fortunate.

I'm sure that many of you will be able to relate to this, or know people who have been affected by an off the lead dog.

Being Responsible Many dogs are friendly, but some just do not get on well with other canines. In my local area, I often see a man who has a good level of control over his dog that doesn't get on well with others. Whenever another dog passes by, the dog is instructed to do a down stay, but if someone lets their off-lead, out of control dog bound over to this dog, there could be terrible consequences.

A well know trainer said that with a dog in the down position and another dog comes bounding over the other dog should be told to go away, because the dog in the down position could get up and attack him.
